USAF Announces Signature Event in National Capital Region

(Arlington, VA) – Arlington Sports, Inc is proud to announce that the US Air Force will be creating a new signature sporting event in the National Capital Region, the US Air Force Cycling Classic. Cycling enthusiast of all abilities will be able to participate in the event to be held Sunday, May 4, 2008.

The US Air Force Cycling Classic participants will be able to ride on a 12 1/2 kilometer circuit in Arlington, VA that will challenge them for up to 8 laps or 100km. Following this amateur ride, a Men’s Professional race will then take place on the same course, with most of the nation’s top cyclists expected to be in attendance.

“The US Air Force is pleased to create this new event in the National Capital Region that will take place in the shadow of the US Air Force Memorial,” said Major General Frank Gorenc, Commander, Air Force District of Washington, Bolling Air Force Base, D.C. “We are looking forward to the 2008 US Air Force Cycling Classic and it’s continuing success; as we forge this initiative into a marquee sporting event in the DC region.”

The US Air Force Cycling Classic will begin with an amateur participatory ride, open to cyclists of all abilities, beginning and ending at the US Air Force Memorial. Awards will be available for those who finish more than two laps of the course, up to 8 laps or 100km. After the completion of the participatory ride, the Men’s Pro race will also begin at the US Air Force Memorial. A Women’s Pro and various men’s amateur categories will follow on a smaller circuit in Crystal City.

“Arlington creates the perfect setting for a bike ride and race of this type, with great roads and excellent spectating locations and some of the nation’s most recognizable monuments and memorials serving as a backdrop,” said Robert Laybourn, President of Arlington Sports. “Amateur cyclists of all abilities will be able to use this event as a training objective and then see how their performances stack up with some of the worlds top Pros.”

Registration for the amateur participatory ride is now open through the events website: www.arlingtonsports.org. Active duty and reserve military personnel receive a $10 discount.

Arlington Sports, Inc is a Virginia based 501(c)3 non-profit, dedicated to the promotion and development of professional and amateur bike racing. For additional information on the US Air Force Cycling Classic and other ASI events, please visit www.arlingtonsports.org.
